About The Big Picture High School

Background

The Bloomfield Public School District contracted with The Big Picture Company to assist in designing the Big Picture High School, a new magnet high school.  The school is based on the idea that students learn best when they are actively engaged in their own educations through personalized learning, authentic work, adult mentors and family involvement. The school will open in the fall of 2005 with an initial class of 30 9th graders.

The Big Picture Company is located in Providence, Rhode Island.  It is funded by the Gates Foundation to open small schools across the nation.  The innovators of the Big Picture School design, Dennis Littky and Eliot Washor, are the co-directors of the Big Picture Company and have operated Big Picture Schools for the past eight years.
